Manual J, Manual S & Manual D — Done Right
Most HVAC contractors skip the math and guess at equipment size. We don't. J&P Mechanical Solutions is licensed and certified to perform the three critical load and design calculations that every properly installed HVAC system requires — and we do them on every new installation.
Why These Calculations Matter
An oversized system short-cycles — it blasts on, hits the thermostat setpoint, and shuts off before it can properly dehumidify your home. An undersized system runs constantly and still can't keep up on the hottest or coldest days. Both scenarios mean higher energy bills, premature equipment failure, and uncomfortable living spaces. The only way to get it right is to do the math.
Manual J
Residential Load Calculation
Manual J is the ACCA-approved method for calculating exactly how much heating and cooling your home needs — measured in BTUs. It accounts for your home's square footage, insulation levels, window sizes and orientations, local climate data, ceiling heights, and more. This calculation determines the correct equipment capacity so your system is neither too big nor too small.
Why it matters
Required by most building codes and permits. Without it, you're guessing — and guessing wrong costs you money every month.
Manual S
Equipment Selection
Once we know your home's load from Manual J, Manual S guides the selection of the specific equipment model that matches those requirements. It accounts for real-world performance data — how a unit actually performs at your local design temperatures, not just its rated capacity under ideal lab conditions.
Why it matters
Ensures the equipment you purchase actually delivers the capacity your home needs on the hottest summer day and coldest winter night.
Manual D
Duct System Design
Manual D is the science of designing your duct system so that conditioned air reaches every room in the right quantity. It calculates duct sizes, layouts, and static pressure to ensure balanced airflow throughout the entire home — no hot or cold rooms, no noisy registers, no wasted energy pushing air through undersized ducts.
Why it matters
A perfectly sized system connected to a poorly designed duct system will still underperform. Manual D is what makes the whole system work together.
Our technicians are ACCA-certified and licensed to perform Manual J, S, and D calculations in Maryland, DC, and Virginia. Every new installation we complete includes a full load calculation report — provided to you at no extra charge.
